About the Hunt

I am located in an area with many Trophy Muskie, Walleye, and Northern Pike, as well as Pan Fish Lakes with Public Access and Trout Streams with Brook Trout.

The Bear Season creates many problems for attire, as the weather can change rapidly. Bring clothes that can cover all situations so you can be comfortable.

Other gear includes – If you plan on hunting from a Tress, bring a Portable Tree Stand, Climbing Sticks. A Safety Belt and Hunter Orange if Gun Hunting. Screw in Steps are NOT Allowed on Public Property.

Keep your clothes and body as Scent-Free as possible.

Plan on hunting until Legal Hours are over. Coming out too Early will make the Bears nervous.

All Hunters Should Practice with their Weapons.

Make sure the Bear is NOT a sow with Cubs as they are Illegal to Shoot.

If you have any health restrictions, Let Me Know Immediately, so we can be on the same page in my Preparation for your Hunt.

The Hunting method I use for Black Bear is Baited Stands during the Afternoon/ Evening periods. My Baits are monitored with Game Cameras to check size of the Bear and the time of Feeding Activity. Baits are located from 10 yards to 93 yards. Tree stands are not supplies as you may bring your own, as my insurance doesn’t allow me to supply them, as I am a guide not an outfitter. Everyone participates from Hunt Set Up, Baiting, Tracking, and Recovery of your animal. Of course I will provide any assistance you may need.

I am a fully Insured and Licensed Guide for Ottawa National Forest and State of Michigan Land.

We Hunt Ottawa National Forest ONLY, located 10 miles south of Lake Gogebic and right along the Wisconsin Border. We don’t have a lot of Hunters. Base Camp is located on the State Line Lake, right where we are Hunting. Baits are located within 20 miles.

Licensing and Tags

Michigan Black Bear hunting tags are selected by a drawing. Application period is May 1st to May 31st. Drawing takes place in late June. My Hunt Area is Bergland Bear Management Area. This is located in the far Western Upper Peninsula. Regarding the drawing, First hunt period is September 10th, Second hunt period is September 15th, and the Third hunt period is September 25th. *NOTE* The opening period would be best for hunter success and the later hunt has a less hunter success, as other Hunters such as Bird, Deer, and Small Game change the Bears Habitats.

Any questions about licenses and/or applications see the Michigan DNR website
